    Notes: Comments on the back of the photo: A Bell KINGCOBRA flown by NACA test pilot Howard Lilly in the Thompson Traphy Race at the Cleveland Air Races. Qualifying speed 346.155 miles per hour. Powered by al Allison V-17010-95 engine, Number 64 had little variation from the standard military type, except for the removal of armor plating, armament and the like.

    Notes: Russ Hosler intended that Race 55 would compete for the 1949 Thompson Trophy, again with Bob Eucker at the controls. Problems prior to qualification meant that Double Nickel failed to qualify for the 1949 races. For 1949 the plane featured the three bladed prop that was used in 1947.
