Tom Aberle quoted: #3, #32, #25, #31 and #40, all one airplane! I first flew the airplane much as Boland had it with one exception, the tailwheel had been installed IN the rudder. Ground handling was frightful! In flight the airplane was hyper sensitive in pitch, which I hoped to cure with the T tail, and it did not help. I learned to handle it, meaning do not move the elevator, you only had to think about moving it to get and abundance of response. Patti reverted the horizontal to conventional position- thinking it would help, and I know it did not. BTW- Phantom is the same in pitch!

Patti Johnson quoted: You are wrong Tom. It did help.

Notes: Tom Aberle and his racing biplane as it appeared at the 1981 Reno Air Races. I know this eventually became Long Gone Mong. Not sure what he called it in 1981. Al Chute photo.

Tom Aberle comments: Absolutely the best on-corse visibility I have flown. Updraft cooling worked like A. We dreamed. Took a bit to get used to for landing. It had good habits but once rotation was initiated had to change gaze from over top wing to little side windows below upper wing trailing edge. On first experiencing this change while on final it was shocking how the perspective changed.

Tom Aberle comments (2015): Bill Woods bought it shortly after 88, we removed the O-320 and put an IO-360 in for him along w/ paint and other works. I told him that his first flight should be about :10, instead he took off from Fallbrook for Bakersfield and distorted the MLG forks on landing. He would not fly it again, I was listed as alt pilot and flew it for him for 89 and sold it for him to Patty. She broke it on her first flight, we repaired/painted it for her in the current GB Zee colors.
