    Constructed as a XF-91.
    Ordered as XP-81, redesignated June 1948 to XF-91 during construction. Had conventional jet engine with rocked motor below it.

    Factory roll out.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 46-0680.

    1949

    Transferred to Edwards AFB, CA.

    9 May 1949

    First flight.

    First American fighter to exceed Mach 1 in level flight by use of jet engine plus rocket.

    Fitted with a small nose radome above the intake for gunnery training.
