    Constructed as a YH-40-BF.

    August 1958

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 56-6723.

    1960

    Redesignated as YUH-1B.

    Converted to a 533.
    Converted by Bell with modified rotor mast inside a redesigned fairing, a modified vertical tail unit, and extensive streamiling, resulting in level flight speeds of over 170 mph and 180 mph in shallow dives. Later equipped with two 920-lbst turbo-jet engines (one on either side of the fuselage) and two stub wings. Other engines later fitted to achieve over 300 mph. Aircraft tested by both Air Force and Army.
