    By October 1962

    Constructed as a VC-137C.

    President Kennedy had the airplane painted in its distinctive paint scheme.

    1962

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 62-6000.
    This aircraft operated in the presidential fleet as Air Force One, and on missions not carrying the President it was known as SAM 26000.

    Transferred to 89th Military Airlift Wing, Andrews AFB, MD.

    November 1963

    President Johnson was sworn in to office aboard this aircraft as it carried President Kennedys body back to Washington, DC.

    1972

    Became back-up plane to new SAM 27000.

    January 1973

    When former President Johnson died, his body was flown in this aircraft from Texas to Washington DC for funeral, and then returned to Texas.

    By May 1989

    Redesignated as C-137C.

    January 1998

    Last time this aircraft flew a sitting President was when the primary aircraft was stuck in the mud in Champaign, IL. This aircraft was stationed as back-up at Grissom AFB, IN and was dispatched to pick up President Clinton and flew him to La Crosse, WI and then to Washington, DC. The aircraft was then retired from service.

    May 1998

    Ferry flight. Delivered to National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright Field, Dayton, OH.
    Aircraft was retired from service at the NMUSAF after 13,000 flying hours.
