    11 July 1983

    Crashed.
There was one serious injury. The accident occurred at Webb, TX, United States while maneuvering. The airframe was destroyed. The pilot stated that before flying under wires a bird struck and broke a plastic fuel gauge mounted under the center section of the upper wing. Fuel reportedly sprayed onto the windscreen and the pilots face restricting his forward visibility. In an effort to miss the powerlines the aircraft was flown into the trees...
For a complete description of the event read the NTSB Report.

Notes: Aftermath photo of crash - pilot Johnny Seay

Johnny Seay was the pilot of the aircraft when it crashed - In 2015 we exchanged messages about what happened to the airframe after the crash - the reply was - This is the crash of N59085 July 11, 1983. I survived and walked away from it. I did not walk far, but walked. Two weeks in hospital and in a month was back flying. There was nothing left of the Stearman but the data plate and landing gear and a few fittings. I sold those to a man who was building up a Stearman and need the data plate and paper work. The inference here is that if it was not the airframe involved in the crash that was re-built - and only the data plate was re-used -then the aircraft subsequently restored from this point may have unknown origins.
