    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Navy with BuNo 121707.

    Involved in an incident.
    Damaged in a forced landing at Imperial Beach, CA.

    Struck off Strength/Charge from the United States Navy.
    Sold as surplus to a civil owner for a planned rebuild.

    From 28 April 1960 to 1970

    To The Kaman Aircraft Corp, Bloomfield, CT with new c/r N1027B (F8F-2, 121707).

    Used as a wind machine.

    18 May 1965

    Civil registration, N1027B, cancelled.

    From 1970 to 1978

    To USMC Museum, MCAS Quantico, VA.

    1978

    Circa Trucked to Mojave, CA, for rebuild by McDonnell Enterprises. The work was being carried out for the USMC Museum. EVENT[TRNFER].

    16 April 1980

    To A. Wally McDonnell, Mojave, CA.

    From 1981 to 1992

    To Pioneer Aero/Elmer F. Ward, Chino, CA.
    Remained dismantled while with Mr. Ward.

    From 1981 to 1992

    Restored.
    One source indicates the restoration used parts from D.1261. It is assumed here that most of the airframe, including the cokcpit/center section, came from D-1081. Using paperwork from sn D.739A, a Gulfhawk, the airframe adoped the identification of that airframe.

    Crashed.
    There was one serious injury. The accident occurred at the Wittman Regional Airport (OSH) Oshkosh, WI, United States while taking off. The damage was substantial. During initial climb the engine backfired and sustained a power loss. The pilot configured the airplane for a forced landing with the landing gear and flaps extended. On touchdown the airplane cartwheeled. A post accident examination revealed that the mixture control was partially closed...
