Somehow this image being in black and white emphasized what a dreary Monday it was when I took this photo of the Leeward Air Ranch Special.

Notes: This was at final flight of the Galloping Ghost. About 45 seconds after this photo was taken the Ghost crashed. The pilot Jimmy Leeward perished along with a number of spectators on the ground.

    16 September 2011

Wendell Monatague comments (30 December 2013): I was there that day and saw the Ghost come over my position inverted. It did not look right. I watched as it came down in the seating area and the loud crunch bang followed by the sound of shattered metal skittering across the ramp. My friend was in the bleachers and could count rivets as they went by. He was shaken. It was a bad day.
