    Raced as #83.
    The race was from Saint Petersburg, FL, to Reno. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Harolds Club Transcontinental race. The primary pilot was Jim Fugate. Started the One Mile Course race, but did not finish. Left the race due to an engine issue.

    From 20 September 1967 to 24 September 1967

    Raced as #83.
    This was essentially a stock P-51D with airframe cleanup including the removal and refairing off the wing gun ports. Also a round tip Hamilton Standard propeller with cuffs was installed. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Jim Fugate. Qualified in 11th place with an average speed of 275.66 mph. Dropped out on the ninth lap with mechanical problems.

    Raced as #83, named Twinkletown Special.
    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Harolds Club Transcontinental race. The primary pilot was Jim Fugate. Raced in the One Mile Course race. Finished in 5th place with an average speed of 286.82 mph.

    This was a P-51D modified for racing. The wing gun ports were refaired. The wing was extended with the addition of fiberglass tips. A round tip Hamilton Standard propeller with cuffs was installed. The extended wing included additional internal fuel tanks for cross country competition, but was first entered in the Reno 1968 races. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Jim Fugate. Qualified in 9th place with an average speed of 267.72 mph. Raced in the Reserve race. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 306.43 mph.

    The reace was from Milwaukee, WI to Reno. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Harolds Club Transcontinental race. The primary pilot was Charles Doyle. Raced in the One Mile Course race. Finished in 5th place with an average speed of 279.88 mph.

    Charles Doyle had flown the airframe in the transcontinental race and was not intended to participate in the closed-course races, however, Doyle loaned it to Mike Loening for the Consolation race when Loenings P-51 developed engine problems. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Mike Loening. Raced in the Make-Up race. Finished in 1st place with an average speed of 319.48 mph.
