    Constructed as a C-74.
    5th C-74 produced.

    1946

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 42-65406.

    18 September 1947

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 42-65406.

    1949

    Converted to a YC-124 by Douglas at Long Beach, CA, USA.
    Fuselage redesigned and rebuilt with increased size and with clam-shell loading doors. Fitted with 3500 hp R-4360-49 engines with 4-bladed props.

    Wikipedia and numerous Internet sites report this aircraft as being re-serialed as 48-795. 48-795 was the first PRODUCTION C-124A and NOT the same aircraft as 42-65406.

    27 November 1949

    First flight.
    First flight as YC-124.

    Aircraft was retrofitted with radome and wing heaters before being returned to the USAF for active service.

    Converted to a YC-124A by Douglas at Long Beach, CA, USA.
    Re-engined with 3800 hp R-4360-35A engines.

    November 1957

    Ferry flight. Delivered to United States Air Force Museum, Patterson Field (East Side), Dayton, OH.

    Aircraft deemed too large to transport to new museum, so it was donated to the base Fire Department for fire-fighting training.
