    Constructed as a B-17E-BO by Boeing at Seattle, Washington, USA.

    Circa 1941

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 41-2446.

    Markings Applied: Swamp Ghost

    23 February 1942

    Crashed.
    Crash-landed Feb 23, 1942 in swamp while returning from a raid on Rabaul. Crew walked away from the crash site and were eventually returned to Port Moresby and were returned to combat. Plane remained half-submerged in a swamp.

    From 23 February 1942 to 2006

    Abandoned.
    Had been sitting in the Aigiambo Lake in Papua New Guinea for 64 years.

    2006

    David Tallichet, the founder of MARC, had reportedly secured permission to recover this plane. He was denied permission by the PNG government to exercise salvage rights and sold the salvage rights to Alfred Hagen. Hagen and Robert Geinert in 2006 had wings and enginesremoved and airlifted the fuselage to Lae, PNG. Aircraft was impounded by the PNG government and it was left sitting on the wharf at Lae.
