    Certificate of airworthiness for NR9640C (T-28A, 50-290) issued.

    20 September 1990

    To Earl J. Schafer, Waco, TX with new c/r N9640C.

    From 18 March 1994 to 20 March 1994

    Raced as #620.
    Competed at the Phoenix 500 Air Races in the T-28 class. The primary pilot was Earl Schafer. Raced in Heat 2B. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 237.028 mph.

    To unknown owner with c/r N9640C.

    23 August 1995

    Crashed.
    There were two serious injuries. The accident occurred at Rexburg, ID, United States while climbing. The airframe was destroyed. The pilot reported that during climbout he began to smell smoke and turned back toward the airport. By the time he was headed back toward the airport, the cockpit was full of smoke. When he opened the canopy to get rid of the smoke, fire entered the cockpit, burning his face and hands...
