    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Navy with BuNo 43771 as a SNJ-5.

    To unknown owner with c/r N612MD.

    From 10 September 1974 to 15 September 1974

    Raced as #12, named Miss Houston.
    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the T-6 class. The primary pilot was Marlin D Washburn. Qualified in 11th place with an average speed of 201.49 mph. Raced in the Reserve race. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 195.89 mph.

    From 9 October 1974 to 13 October 1974

    Raced as #12.
    Competed at the National Air Races Mojave in the T-6 class. The primary pilot was Marlin Washburn. Qualified in 9th place with an average speed of 206.314 mph. Raced in Heat 1A. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 205.367 mph. Raced in the Trophy race. Finished in 5th place with an average speed of 206.015 mph.

    From 18 June 1975 to 22 June 1975

    Raced as #12.
    Competed at the California National Air Races in the T-6 class. The primary pilot was Marlin Washburn. Qualified in 7th place with an average speed of 211.24 mph. Started the Make-Up race, but did not finish. Left the race on lap 5 due to the landing gear failing to retract.

    From 9 September 1975 to 14 September 1975

    Raced as #12, named Miss Houston.
    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the T-6 class. The primary pilot was M D Washburn. Qualified in 10th place with an average speed of 203.39 mph. Started Heat B, but did not finish. Washburn leapt into the lead on the back straight at the Air Start and led still as they came down the front straight past the Home Pylon to begin the first official lap. In his eagerness to maintain and/or stretch that lead, he cut the #1 pylon a little too closely and hit the top of it with his left wing, A large section of the wing was instantly torn away and the airplane went straight in. Washburn was killed instantly. The race continued then to its normal conclusion.

    Crashed.
    Summarized NTSB narrative from report number OAK76FXQ16: There was one fatality. Incident occurred at 12:40 hours. The airframe was destroyed. Incident occurred at the Reno-stead Airport, Reno, NV. This was a local flight from Reno, NV. Collided with an object while in flight. Report remarks include: Collided with pylon during closed course race.
