Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the T-6 class. The primary pilot was M D Washburn. Qualified in 10th place with an average speed of 203.39 mph. Started Heat B, but did not finish. Washburn leapt into the lead on the back straight at the Air Start and led still as they came down the front straight past the Home Pylon to begin the first official lap. In his eagerness to maintain and/or stretch that lead, he cut the #1 pylon a little too closely and hit the top of it with his left wing, A large section of the wing was instantly torn away and the airplane went straight in. Washburn was killed instantly. The race continued then to its normal conclusion. |

This was a local flight from Reno, NV. Collided with an object while in flight. Report remarks include: Collided with pylon during closed course race.
