    Constructed as a B-17G-110-VE by Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California, USA.

    Circa May 1945

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 44-85813.

    From October 1945 to 1957

    Leased to Curtiss-Wright Corp, Caldwell, NJ.

    1946

    Converted to a 299Z.
    The work was carried out by Boeing at Wichita, KS. The military equipment was removed, the pilots cockpit was moved farther back, and the nose was completely modified to accommodate the experimental engine. Turned over to the Wright Aeronautical Company under a bailment contract. The aircraft was fitted with a 5500 hp Wright XT35 Typhoon turboprop in the nose. This engine was more powerful than all four of the standard Wright Cyclone piston engines operating together. However, the Wright Typhoon was ultimately unsuccessful, and did not go into production.

    Redesignated as EB-17G.

    September 1947

    First flight.

    1951

    A J65 Saphire jet engine was installed in the nose position.

    Redesignated as JB-17G.

    From 30 August 1957 to 1966

    To Wright Aeronautical Company, Woodbridge, CT with new c/r N6694C.

    Fitted with a Wright R3350 in nose for propeller research.

    By 1965

    The nose position was fitted with a T-64-G turbine with 6 bladed propeller.

    From 1 December 1966 to 1969

    To Ewing Aviation Co, San Ramon, CA keeping c/r N6694C.

    Ferry flight.
    Delivered to Spearfish, SD, with a rounded nose cap.

    From 1967 to 1970

    Restored.
    Rebuilt at Spearfish with a standard forward fusealge.

    15 August 1969

    To Ewing-Kolb Aircraft, Spearfish, SD keeping c/r N6694C.

    Operated as fire service #C12.
    Operated as a tanker.

    Operated as fire service #12.
    Operated as a tanker.

    30 July 1970

    To Black Hills Aviation/Arnold Kolb, Spearfish, SD keeping c/r N6694C.

    To Black Hills Aviation/Arnold Kolb, Alamogordo, NM keeping c/r N6694C.

    Circa 1980

    Harry Friedman comments (2 January 2020): Early 1980s Arnold Kolb delivered #7 bulkhead to Memphis VoTech to be used on the restoration of the Memphis Belle.

    To Flying Tigers Warbird Restoration Museum/Tom Reilly, Kissimmee Municipal Airport, Kissimmee, FL.
    Crash remains eventually acquired by Tom Reilly of Kissimmee, FL for use in creating a flyable B-17 out of usable parts from this plane and from 44-85734.
