    Dates

    Event

    1944

Constructed as a F2G-1 by Goodyear.

Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Navy with BuNo 88458.

    Circa 1947

    To Cook Cleland.
The Super Corsairs were essentially already highly modified military airframes with the more powerful engines and thus did not require as much work and expense for racing teams to build a competitive racer. The success of the Becker and Cleland flown airframes inspired Cleland to acquire this F2G project.

    Restored.
Cook Cleland purchased this F2G at the same time as the wreck of BuNo 88457 c/r N5588N. In 1947 88457 crashed during the Thompson Trophy Race. This airframe had originally been purchased for spares, but instead this airframe was built up using the same registration and construction number as the crashed aircraft and it is this aircraft that survives today. One interesting feature of the restoration was that one propeller blade was painted while while the the others were black, which made it appears as if the prop was turning slowly.
