    Constructed as a L-300-50A-01.
    Dale Bennet comments (April 2016): Not built as a C-141A but as an L300-50A-01 in an attempt to interest civil air carriers. I believe Lockheed was going to build two, but only completed the one after there was no civilian interest. Is it me, or does the forward fuselage look even shorter than the standard C-141A?.

    Notes: N714NA - C-141A Starlifter - NASA - Moffett Field / NASA Ames Research Center - Modified to carry the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, the KAO carried a 36-inch reflecting telescope capable of conducting infrared astronomy, and flew at altitudes of 41,000 to 45,000 feet, above 99 percent of the Earths infrared-absorbing water vapour.
